On Wednesday, Paramore released their long-awaited new song “This Is Why.” It serves as the lead single for their upcoming album of the same name, which will be released on Feb. 10, 2023, and be their first studio album in six years.
The song starts out uncharacteristically laid-back, channeling the Red Hot Chili Peppers through smooth, guitar-led verses. But this deception is short-lived, as lead singer Hayley Williams soon launches into a huge chorus that is sure to stick in your brain from the moment you hear it: “This is why I don’t leave the house,” she sings/chants over a catchy riff.
Lyrically, the song joins one of the many created by musical acts attempting to navigate a post-pandemic world. Sonically, it’s a blend of everything Paramore has made up to this point: the punkish energy of their early days, the ‘80s/new wave feel of 2017’s After Laughter, the indie-pop vibes of Hayley’s solo material. But at the same time, it sounds fresh and different. It’s a promising teaser for what’s to come.
